Postdoc (Partial) Satisfaction - "Most postdocs are satisfied with their positions, according to a new national survey. But the study also identified significant problems with the postdoc system — including a lack of funds for some (especially those from outside the U.S.) and a lack of training for many."
The Chronicle of Higher Education
Postdoc Survey Finds That Structured Training and Career Advice, Not Necessarily High Pay, Spell Success - "Postdoctoral scientific researchers are more likely to be happy with their jobs and to publish copiously when they receive a lot of structured training and advice from mentors, according to a survey of postdocs scheduled for release today."
Science Now
Survey Says: Respect Your Postdocs - "Careful tending of a young plant, every gardener knows, is more likely to yield a bountiful harvest. The same is true for postdocs, according to a new study released today, which shows that a well-structured environment pays off in greater productivity, more so than do salary and benefits."

US salaries - reason for European postdocs to stay at home? - "The European Union's bid to encourage more of its scientists to stay in their continent of origin has been bolstered by the publication of a survey claiming that foreign postdocs in the US work longer hours and publish more than their American counterparts, but are paid less."
Nature Jobs
Tale of two surveys - "Two surveys unveiled at the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) annual meeting in San Diego this month showed progress for postdocs on issues of salary and job satisfaction. But they also highlighted current problems, and indicated storm clouds on the horizon."

Postdoctoral Researchers Value Structured Training Over Pay, Survey Says - "Postdoctoral scientific researchers are more likely to be happy with their jobs and to publish copiously when they receive a lot of structured training and advice from mentors, according to a survey of postdocs released last week."

US undervalues foreign researchers, survey reveals - "[SAN DIEGO] Foreign postdocs in the United States work longer hours and publish more, but are paid less than their American counterparts, according to a poll of young scientists."
The Scientist
US postdocs happy, but... - "Most US postdocs are fairly content, according to results from a pilot survey by Sigma Xi to be presented today (April 16) at the second annual meeting of the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) in Washington, DC. However, noncitizens are less positive, and many respondents noted a lack of training in non-research areas, among other complaints."
Three Reports Tackle the Postdoc Mess
"The plight of early-career scientists has come under exceptional scrutiny in recent weeks as three major scientific institutions each released a report on the postdoc system. The National Research Council (NRC) led off in mid-March 2005 with Bridges to Independence: Fostering the Independence of New Investigators in Biomedical Research. Then in late April the National Science Foundation (NSF) and Sigma Xi weighed in, respectively, with Postdoctoral Appointments: Policies and Practices — Report on a Workshop and Doctors Without Orders: Highlights of the Sigma Xi Survey. The three studies do not agree on the best solutions or even on what the real problem is. They propose fixes ranging from incremental improvement to radical surgery. But their near-simultaneous appearance suggests that the postdoc issue may finally be reaching critical mass among the nation's science policy elite."

Planning for a positive postdoc - "If you want to give your postdoctoral position the best chance of being a success, you need a plan. That is one of the strong messages to come from a recent survey of US postdocs, conducted by Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina."
Nature Genetics
Pause for postdocs - "Curiosity. Is that what induces highly educated people in their early thirties, many of whom have a family, to work for just over half the salary of other workers with a doctoral degree, less than a dollar an hour more than the Harvard janitor? According to a recent survey, roughly one-third of postdoctoral researchers say they are motivated by the prospect of becoming independent researchers in their own right. Rather than money, it seems that postdocs could be rendered more productive and better satisfied by a simple formal exchange to establish exactly what it is they have been recruited to do."
New Scientist
Know How to Beat the Odds - "AN ASPIRING postdoctoral scholar could be forgiven for feeling some anxiety about the next few years of their career. Open any science magazine and you'll be told that life as a postdoc can be fraught with perils such as low pay, few benefits and, worst of all, a lack of career prospects."

Yale can bolster global ties within Univ. - Chinese President Hu Jintao's Friday visit to Yale was an historic event. It underscored the success of University President Richard Levin's ongoing efforts to build a close relationship between the University and the Chinese government.
